The marriage license fee is paid directly by you to the town clerk’s office — typically $50 per C.G.S. § 7-73, plus $20 for a certified copy.
This is where couples run into trouble most often. Here is the short version so you don’t.
Per C.G.S. § 46b-24, your marriage license must come from the Town Clerk’s office in the town where your ceremony will take place — not where you live. Getting married at Saltwater Farm near Stonington? You go to Stonington’s Town Clerk, not your home town.
Your license is valid for 65 days from the date of application. Plan to get it no more than two weeks before the ceremony — early enough to avoid a rush, late enough to stay comfortably inside the window.
If you live in New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts and are marrying at a Connecticut venue, you still apply at the Town Clerk in the Connecticut town where the ceremony takes place. Connecticut has no residency requirement. No blood test required. Tony walks every out-of-state couple through this process so nothing gets missed.
